Hello! Today we will go on the most popular excursion not only in Paphos, but in general throughout Cyprus. We will see the Troodos mountain range, Kykkos Monastery and other attractions. We are sure that it will be very interesting! We will show and tell everything. Our excursion to the Troodos mountains will pass along the most popular route. We will see the highest peak of Cyprus, visit several monasteries. Enjoy the scenery of the famous Cedar Valley. And make a wish on the very shore where the goddess of beauty Aphrodite first set foot on the ground. We will also try local wines, dishes and sweets. The first stop is a monastery dedicated to the Virgin. It is built in the mountains at an altitude of 700 meters. According to legend, the monastery was founded after the miraculous acquisition of the icon with the image of Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate. It was written by the apostle Luke. Pilgrims from all over the world come to the icon. Our guide Galina told us the amazing story of this place. In the courtyard of the monastery there is a wonderful observation deck. And next to it grows a huge centuries-old pine which is trepidly protected in Cyprus. As we have learned, local residents generally respect the flora and fauna very carefully. After inevitable forest fires, for example, not only special services, but also volunteers are engaged in landscaping the island. We are going further. Along the way, our guide tells us facts that you will not find in guidebooks. Galina has been living in Cyprus since the last millennium and knows everything about these places. She will easily answer any question, she knows hundreds of myths and legends, and most importantly – she is endlessly in love with the island. We heartily recommend her as a guide. Galina’s contacts will be left in the description for this video. Address her, you will not regret! Such amazing air, such beauty, silence, birds sing. And we are already in the Cedar Valley. It is located in the Paphos Forest and consists of several thousand unique trees. You will not meet such anywhere else. On the tour we learned how the island was formed in geological terms. And also about the fact that mouflons live in Cyprus. These swirling horns rams are an endangered species. Sometimes tourists meet mouflons during excursions. Do not be afraid, they are not dangerous. Meanwhile, we got to the Kykkos Monastery. The most famous monastery of Cyprus is built on the slope of the Troodos massif and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The place was founded in 1100. Here all year round you can meet pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. The Kykkos Monastery is stored icon painted with the face of the Virgin in her lifetime. Its author is the apostle Luke. The miracles associated with this icon are told from generation to generation. Galina told us the story of this place and the stunning frescoes decorating its walls and arches. We walked along the corridors and arcades, examined the details and enjoyed the atmosphere. On the tour you have to find out why the miraculous icon is stored in Cyprus. What difficulties did the founder of the monastery have to overcome, why is there a hand model next to the icon … And much more. For pilgrims in the temple is open hall of the relics. You cannot shoot video inside. During the tour you will be amazed. The main hall is decorated with rich chandeliers and a unique golden iconostasis. This is a very beautiful place! After visiting the Kykkos Monastery we went to see local souvenirs in shops nearby. It turned out that the prices here are lower than in Paphos, and the choice is simply amazing. This is a whole fig. These spirals, if you see, are pumpkin, jam. Here is the jam from the citrus peel – bergamot. This is churchkhela. Different from Georgian? Different fillings: almonds, walnuts. Different colors: this is usual (grape juice boiled down to density), and here – with the addition of pomegranate syrup. And this one, of such chocolate color, is a carob. The seller treated us to tea and Cypriot goodies. Here we learned a lot about the local products. Peanuts in sweet glaze with sesame seeds. Very soft, sweet, delicious! What is there only! I wanted to buy the whole shop. There are many unique souvenirs in Cyprus. Jam alone is worth it! Olives, honey, cosmetics, oil, tea, spices – eyes run wide. The most useful honey is thyme. Dark, a bit like buckwheat. Helps against various diseases. Would you like to try olive jam? And thyme honey? What about carob syrup? Amazing goodies! Donkey milk has amazing properties, it is very healing. Cleopatra also knew about this. And now we go to church shop Kykkos Monastery. Here you can buy rare icons, jewelry and traditional souvenirs. Here we also had a short excursion. Wine must be tasted. I’ll pour you a little bit – take a sip. This is a monastery wine made from dried grapes. You will not find such wine in stores. It is bottled on Mount Athos. This is our famous Cypriot wine Commandaria. Very good people work in the church shop, who will certainly help you choose an icon, souvenir or gift to a loved one. We were treated to local wine. They told why pomegranate is one of the symbols of Christianity, and generally accepted very welcome. In the Troodos mountains from several points you can see the silhouette of a snow-white cross mounted on top of the mountain. Next to it is a chapel. It also offers a wonderful view of the natural attractions of Cyprus. If you drive closer, at the top of the white cross you can see another, red. It faces the Turkish part of the island. On the tour you have to find out why this is done. A snow-white 25-meter cross, a secluded chapel, a bell, a mountain village on the side of a mountain … This is a very beautiful place. During an excursion to Troodos you will pass several mountain villages. You should definitely look into one of them for lunch. Our choice fell on the so-called Cherry Village. Tasty name, right? In season and sweet cherries can be enjoyed. For lunch we went to a very cozy panoramic cafe. We ate roasted halumi and drank coffee with Cypriot sweets, admiring the charming roofs of fabulous houses from the window. Previously we saw such landscapes only on postcards and pictures on the Internet. The atmosphere was supplemented by a live fire in the fireplace. I took dessert, it is very similar to baklava. Inside milk cream. He’s with nuts, all of nuts! Divine! Awesome place! It’s great that we drove here. We froze a little, it’s cool in the mountains. And here we bask, enjoy the beautiful view. Very tasty, very beautiful, good! The weather let us down a bit. We arrived in Cyprus in February when snow falls in Troodos. Our guide knows that riding to the top of Olymbos during glaciation is unsafe. So we did not take risks. And to be honest, we were not upset at all. We managed to enjoy the full panoramas of Cyprus. Here is another observation deck at an altitude of 1350 meters. This observation deck, unlike Olymbos, was not obscured by fog – the view is simply gorgeous. A little more – and we are at the highest waterfall in Troodos. It is a pity that through the screen this power, sound and purity of mountain air cannot be transmitted. We sincerely advise you to visit these places and feel all this on yourself. Well, we have to go to the winery. Let us understand the wines of Cyprus. The family winery Lambouri is located at an altitude of over 1100 meters above sea level. The winery owns vineyards on the slopes of the Troodos Mountains. The Lambouri family has been involved in winemaking for over 350 years. Winery products have won a huge number of awards at international exhibitions. Let’s try! Sommelier tells in detail about each drink: grape varieties, especially taste and aroma, which food is suitable. We tried two white and two red wines, two dry and two semi-sweet. All from local grape varieties. Oh, I like it! Also the winery makes delicious olive oil. The aroma is like champagne without gas. Very delicious! Next in line is Commandaria liqueur wine. On the tour you will find out why it is called the wine of kings. Oh, how it smells! Be sure to bring a bottle of Commandaria from Cyprus – this is a wonderful gift and a visiting card of the country. 43 degree alcohol, 100% natural. We also tried strong drinks. For me, as you can see, too much. But I drink only sweet wine – what can I do? At the winery it is very profitable to buy wine. We checked – in stores in Cyprus and duty free it costs more. So if you go on an excursion, do not miss the chance to collect gifts for yourself and loved ones. Be sure to pay attention to chocolate with liquor, Turkish delight, olive oil and souvenirs. We are going further. Along the way Galina tells us about the history and modern life of Cyprus. We also asked her to advise restaurants in Paphos. We asked what to try, what souvenirs to bring, where to go on independent excursions. While we were discussing all this, we fell in love with Cyprus even more. Next in line are the myths and legends of ancient Greece. Soon it will come in handy. Our next stop is the so-called rock of Aphrodite. The place where the goddess of beauty came ashore from the sea foam. Aphrodite went over there. This largest stone is called the rock of Aphrodite. There are many beliefs and legends associated with this place. Sometimes guides send tourists to swim around the stone – they promise eternal youth and beauty. We just made a wish and looked for a stone in the shape of a heart. I made a wish and threw a heart-shaped pebble into the sea. Now it will come true! Nearby is a souvenir shop. We looked at prices – in Paphos they are lower. So it’s better to go to a different place for shopping. About prices in Cyprus we shot a separate video – click on the bell so as not to miss it. We are going to Paphos. The tour lasted 8 hours, but we did not notice how time flew by. It was one of the best days in our lives! If you have any questions about the tour, ask – we will answer in the comments. Support us like – we will be very pleased. And be sure to subscribe to the channel to travel with us.
