Any trip to Amritsar is incomplete without visiting the Golden Temple! People come here from all around the world and they feel the same amount of peace here! Where were you? How do I look? You took so much time! I was getting ready! How do I look? You look amazing! That’s why it took me 2 hours! You are so excited but do you know what is the actual name of Golden Temple? Golden Temple! No, it’s name is Sri Harmandir Sahib! Why do they call it Golden Temple then? It is called Golden Temple because after the Anglo-Sikh wars, Maharaja Ranjit Singh covered… …the temple with 24 carat gold in 1830s! 24 carat gold? Yes, 24 carat! Best carat gold! 500 kgs of gold was used! And today, it’s value is Rs.140 crore! Rs. 140 crore?! Yes, Rs.140 crore! I’ll tell you one more fact! Yes, tell me! Kirtan and Ardas go on for the entire day, non-stop! That means it never stops? Never! The voice of the kirtan makes one feel very peaceful! Yes, it feels very calm! Whatever anger is inside you, it all vanishes! I feel hungry now! Before eating something, we have to do seva too! I did seva in Bangla Sahib too, we have to do it! I love this concept, specially in the Sikh community! Anyone who comes to their gurudwara, any gurudwara for that matter, they won’t return with an empty stomach! The name of this langar is Guru Ram Das Langar Seva! Oh, it’s named after a guru? Yes, and he is the one who started the Amritsar city! The one who made Amritsar? Exactly! Why are they chopping vegetables? They are preparing for the langar! Let’s go and meet some people who actually know about this! Sat Sri Akal Ji! What do you exactly do here? I am the incharge here! Oh, you’re the incharge! How many people come here everyday? People come here in lakhs, we don’t have an exact count! I am a chef and I cook! So, we have a team of 10-12 people and we serve thousands of people! How many people work here to serve lakhs of people? We have 10-12 people who cook! They prepare all the vegetables! I want to make rotis here! You won’t make the roti, rotis are made by machine here! No, they are made by hand! By hand? They have a machine to make rotis and they make it themselves too! So, you’re saying, if one lakh people come here in a day then there are days when around 3 lakh people visit! It’ll be very crowded if 3 lakh people come here in this kitchen! Look at this! Look at this massive kitchen! I have never seen this kind of a massive kitchen! Look at the vegetables! This is Gajar Aloo! This is around 1.5-2 quintal! 2 quintals of vegetable? It’s like, if we’ve to make 1.5-2 quintals of vegetable, we make it here! If we need to make more than that there is a bigger vessel outside! You have a bigger one? Yes, the biggest one! We make the rice here too! This is freshly made? This vegetable is being cooked right now! This is halwa! This is halwa? Pumpkin halwa! Let’s see the biggest vessel now! This was a small vessel, we’ll see the bigger one now! This is kheer! It’s milk! No, it’s kheer! We’ve added 2 quintals of rice to this! 2 quintals? Yes, we’ll make kheer of 2 quintals rice! Thank you! We’ve added 2 quintals of only dal in this! There is no gas here, you make all this by burning wood? Yes, by wood! All the wood you see here, they cook everything on the burning wood! This is the biggest cooking vessel! This is 5 times bigger! This is the biggest cooking vessel in the world! In the world? World’s biggest cooking vessel, take a look! This is how world’s biggest cooking vessel looks! We add 4 quintals of only dal in this! To boil it? Yes! We’ll add 3 quintal more of dal to this! First we’ll cook this 3 quintal then we’ll add more! Now, we’ll go to the machines! Let’s see the machines now! Look at this! They are coming from above! They are falling here! I think it’s important to use machines if you have to serve lakhs of people everyday because… …they have to keep in mind the quality of the food! Everyone should get the right amount of food! This is the modern technology! Now, we’ll see how they make the rotis by hand! We’ll also try to make! There is one section to make the rotis and the other to bake them! There are different sections! One to roll and make them and the other to bake them! I have tried this at Bangla Sahib, if you’ve watched that video! I made rotis there! And he got scolded too! I won’t make rotis today, you make them! I will do the inspection! I’ll believe you if you make a round roti in the first attempt! I am a chef! You have trained him? He is a chef! I am a chef! He cooks food! Yes, he is a chef! Where is the camera? Look at this! Are you seeing this? Round roti! Keep it here! You’ll get scolded too! Let’s get him married now! He is still unmarried? Yes, I am unmarried! People are asking me if I am married or not! I am unmarried! Single! I’ve made 3 rotis! Make at least 5! Make 5! Come on, work! Okay, I’ll make 5! Else, you’ll stay unmarried! No, I’ll make 5 rotis! Now you’ll make 10! You’ve seen everything? Yes, sir! You must eat now! Yes, thank you so much for giving us your valuable time! Let’s go! And now we have been served the langar and we’ll taste it! So, let’s begin! Let’s begin! At least tell them what all we are eating! Oh, yes! So, we have Kheer, Roti, Dal and Sabzi! The sabzi is Gajar Aloo! It tastes like home cooked food! The same that mom cooks at home! But, in ghee! Yes, in ghee! At home, moms might not make it in ghee but here it’s made in ghee! Dal has ghee too! We’ll try the kheer in a while! There is no ghee in the kheer! Yes, there is no ghee in the kheer! What is this? Pickle! I liked the dal very much! Lemon pickle! You like it? Chutneys and pickles are my favorite thing on Earth! Infact, where ever I visit, I bring the chutney and pickles from that place! I have a seperate shelf! That shows the speciality of a place! It’s not possible that we come to Harmandir Sahab and not have halwa! The dal is very tasty! The taste of food is entirely different when you have it with people together at a langar! The concept of Sanjha Chulha is people coming together to eat and the food reflects love! Because it is made with that intention! Let’s taste the kheer that has been made in quintals! Top class! The milk has been boiled perfectly before adding rice! This is rice pudding! Yes, rice pudding! So, I’m enjoying my food! Let me enjoy the entire langar and we’ll see you in a while! Our trip to Amritsar is successful now, after visiting the Golden Temple! You’re right! It was a beautiful experience! We went to their kitchen and saw those massive vessels! Where the food is made in quintals! We had food and our body, mind and soul found peace too! I feel like a tourist in this beautiful market! Let’s eat kulfi from Sonu Kulfi Wala! Here you go, keep it! One more! Thank you! We’ll pay you later! Anyway, we always give a rating of the food at the end of every episode but we can’t do that… …with the food at The Golden Temple I mean, that’s just silly! That we can’t! The food is very tasty and it is made with love and it’s a religious experience so, we can’t do that! Please do visit once and do seva here! Anyway, today’s trivia question is in which year did Maharaja Ranjit Singh cover the golden temple… …with gold? Watch the video again and tell us in the comments below! I know!
