Before knowing about these shrines… We have to know about their place history first. Long ago, as it was the region ruled by the Nanda kings of Pandu dynasty… It was called as the kingdom of Nandas… Later, it became Nandyal. The written scripts were found that the region was occupied by Chandragupta Maurya after defeating them. During the rule of Nanda King, the shepherd used to take his herd of cows to the nearby forest area for gazing. As soon as one of the cows in the cattle stood at the nearby ant-hillock… The shepherd who saw the cow oozing (discharge slowly) the milk from her udder… Then a child came out of the hillock and drank the milk of the cow… He briefed that to the king it seems. The next day the king went into the forest to see such wonderful scene it seems. With the curiosity to see the child who is drinking milk closely, he walked towards the cow… And the sound while walking made the cow frighten and when the cow ran away by stepping on the hillock… Then the child has vanished it seems. To Nandu who slept while feeling sad for his bad luck… That day night, Maheswara appeared in his dream and said… He was the child… Mahanandi who was the son of Shilada Maharshi performed meditation here… And said he sought for the boon to become his vehicle. This shrine will become famous as the most sacred place in his name… And also said to build a temple for the form present inside the hillock it seems. Not only this… He also said, due to various reasons, he has appeared in various forms at other 8 sacred places in his kingdom along with Nandi… And also ordered him to make them available to the people it seems. Nanda who felt very happy for this, according to the order passed by Sarveswara… He constructed the temples at all the places. The written scripts found there showed that Cholas and Vijayanagara kings who ruled after the kings of this dynasty… Worked hard for the development of these temples. The names of these 9 Nandis are… Mahanandi, Prathamanandi, Naganandi, Somanandi, Suryanandi, Shivanandi, Vishnunandi, Garudanandi and Vinayakanandi. Among these 9 temples, while three temples Prathamanandi, Naganandi, Somanandi are located in Nandyal town… Three temples Mahanandi, Garudanandi and Vinayakanandi located are in Mahanandi… Three temples Suryanandi, Shivanandi, Vishnunandi are located in between Mahanandi and Nandyal. On Monday, full moon day, Masashivaratri, Trayodasi… It is said to be auspicious visiting of these 9 Nandi temples from morning until evening on such days… On Shivaratri, the feast is celebrated at all the places.
