This program is dedicated to teach you how to put the Word of God to work so that it will make a positive difference in the everyday circumstances of your life. And now, here’s Charles Capps. CHARLES CAPPS>>Thank you for joining us for the “Concepts of Faith” Program. We’re talking again today concerning the “Power of Positive Faith”. Now, we’re going to conclude this series today, I believe. I want us to go to the Old Testament to II Kings and I want us to look at Chapter Four. We’re talking about the power of positive faith and how that faith can deliver an individual in circumstances in which nothing else could because there is power in believing God, believing His Word, and believing the Prophet of God. In Chapter Four, we have the story of the Shunammite woman, who was a great woman. That means she was a woman of stature, in other words, she had quite a bit of money, so to speak. Elisha, the Prophet, was going down there and she asked him to stay at her home for a while. Let’s begin at verse 8. And the Word says, “It fell on a day that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh, that he shall turn in thither.” Now, in other words, let’s build a prophet’s chamber. That’s how we would say it today. She’s building this man a prophet’s chamber. A place he can use. “And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber and lay there. And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care;(in other words, she’s prepared this for us) what is to be done for you? (And of course, then, she said she didn’t have a child and her husband was old and he said)And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.” And he said: ” About this season according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son and she said nay, my lord thou man of God,do not lie unto thine handmaiden. In other words, she said this is going to be hard to believe, is the way we’d put it in today’s vernacular. But, he prophesied to her that she would have a child at a certain time of the year. Now let’s pick up on it in verse 16. “And he said, about this time, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son.(now verse 17) And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life. And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to the lad, Carry him to his mother. And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then he died.” Now, this is a bad situation, no doubt. A situation where the child evidently had a heat stroke or something, and he sat on the mother’s knee until noon, and the scripture says, he died. Now notice what this woman did. “And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.” Now, you might wonder why in the world she did that. If you remember in the New Testament, in Acts chapter 19 concerning the apostle Paul, the Bible says that God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul, that from his body, aprons and handkerchiefs were taken from his body and sent to the sick and sickness and disease departed from them and evil spirits went out of them. In other words, the anointing of God that was upon Paul surcharged those cloths with a healing anointing that healed the sick. Now that sounds a little bit wild for some folks, I suppose but, we see that the anointing of God is transferable. Now we have another situation that we’ll talk about a little further on. When Elisha died, we’ll find out that his bones resurrected the dead. (laughs) I mean, (laughs), they put a dead man in the cave where he was buried, when the dead man slid down there and touched the bones of that Prophet there was enough anointing of God in that man’s bones till it raised the dead. Exciting things were happening. Now, notice here “she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? It is neither new moon, nor Sabbath.” Now, he was saying, there’s no religious significance of you going to the man of God today. Why are you going? He didn’t even ask about his son, he probably assumed the son is well. Here’s what she said. “And she said, It shall be well.” Then they rode to the prophet of God, Elisha saw them coming and said ‘Gehazi, run ask the Shunammite is it well with thee, is it well with thy son, is it well with thee? In other words, especially, is it well with thy son? “She said, all is well.” Now, see, we’re talking about the power of positive faith. This woman had faith that if God gave her a son, that certainly, God wasn’t going to take that son and it was God’s will for her son to live. All circumstances said that it was not true, that your son is dead. Now the Bible actually says the son sat upon her knee until noon, then died. I mean, he (the son) is graveyard dead. And then she laid him on the bed of the prophet of God. Evidently, somehow, (and we don’t know how) she knew that the anointing of God was transferable by laying her son on the prophet’s bed. I don’t know whether she did or just assumed that. But, she took him and put him on the prophets’ bed. Now when Gehazi said here comes the Shunammite, go ask her is it well with thee, is it well with they husband, is it well with the child? She says, “ALL IS WELL”. And of course she came and laid hold of the feet of the man of God, and he said there’s something that’s happened and the Lord has hidden it from me. And he took his mantle and he gave it to Gehazi and said you go and lay it upon the child. Now, in all of this the woman has never told him yet, that the child is dead. Remember, we are talking about the power of positive faith. This woman would not “talk” to her troubles. I want you to get something out of this because there’s something here that you need to get a hold of. We talked about the fact that Mark 11:23 and 24 says that whosoever says to the mountain, to the problem area, to the bad situation be thou removed, be thou cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart but shall believe what he is saying will come to pass that he (or she) shall have what he says. Now, how did she know that? I don’t know. I don’t know of any old testament things that reveal that exactly, except that God told the children of Israel that He would allow to happen to you or do to you what you say in my ear. I guess that’s Mark 11:23 of the Old Testament. And, then of course, we could pick up something from it from Joshua 1:8 where God told Joshua “Let not the book of the Law depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” In other words, you’ll be successful in all that you do in life regardless of how bad the situation looks or how wrong things seem to be. Hold fast to the Word. Don’t let it depart from your eyes, now, she had the word from the Prophet of God that she would have a son. I assume that she concluded this out of the situation that if God gave me the son, it was His will for me to have the son, and it was not His will for the son to die. I wish some folks could get a hold of that today because there are some people they just simply give up on the Word in the face of all contradictory evidence. I mean, the storms of life come and they start predicting defeat and despair and all of this. But if you hold fast to the Word, it will change some things. The power of positive faith will change it. Now you know the story here as we go on we find that Gehazi went and laid this mantle upon the child and then he comes back. (Verse 31) “And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him and told him saying, The child is not awaked.” Well, bad news again, isn’t it? I mean, it didn’t work. He told Elisha, it didn’t work. The child is dead. “And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.” Now, here we have two verses that tell us that the child is dead. He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain and prayed unto the Lord. And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child: and the flesh of the child waxed warm.” You might say, “What in the world is he doing here?” Evidently, the Prophet of God knew that the anointing of God was upon him and he is making contact with that child. Not only did he lay hands on the child, he laid himself upon the child. Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.” Now, this is quite a story; the power of positive faith. This woman would not give up. She had the Word of God for it; she had the Prophet of God that had told her what had happened. She’s not willing to give this thing up. She’s not going to give it up. He goes and sends Gehazi there and seemingly, it didn’t work. That meant, well, you know, we might as well arrange the funeral. But, no, Elisha laid himself upon the child. And he called Gehazi, and said, Call the Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.” Now, this tells you there is power in positive faith. I keep mentioning the word “positive faith” because there is a “negative faith” and it’s called fear. If this woman had been in fear, they’d be having a funeral. Let me show you this in the New Testament, we’ll talk about it because I don’t have time to turn to it. In the New Testament, Mark, the fifth chapter, Jairus, is the ruler of the synagogue. His daughter is sick and about to die. Jairus comes to Jesus and says ‘My little daughter lies at home and she’s at the point of death but, if you’ll come lay hands on her that she may be healed; she shall live. Notice he said she shall live. Well, she wasn’t alive then, was she? But he said, she shall live. When He (was going with him the woman with the issue of blood came along. She said: If I touch His clothes, I’ll be restored to health. She got healed and then she told all of them the truth. Remember what she said, when I touch His clothes, I’ll be restored to health. When they got there, there’s Jairus and his daughter was raised from the dead. Jesus told him, fear not, but only believe. When bad news comes, He says, FEAR NOT, ONLY BELIEVE. Thank God there is power in positive faith. There was no funeral; there was a resurrection. Hallelujah. I don’t know about you but, that’s exciting to me. I want to point out the fact that when Jairus was standing there and this woman was giving her testimony; the Bible says that she told them all the truth. If you read this story, you find out that she had suffered many things of many physicians and spent all the money that she had. For twelve years, everything she’d tried didn’t work. She actually got worse. Then, she started saying ‘when I touch His clothes, I’ll be restored to health.’ I will ask you this question to provoke your thinking. What made her think she was going to be healed when she touched Jesus’ clothes? You see, there is faith involved here. We know it’s Bible faith because in the Book of Numbers you’ll find that God told the people to sew a fringe around the border of their garment to represent the covenant of God. Sometimes people will have faith that God will do something for them just because he did it for someone else. But, this woman had Bible faith. She had faith that came from the Word: the Covenant of God. She believes in the Covenant of God. Then she starts saying ‘when I touch His clothes, I’ll be restored to health.’ Remember, faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. What you believe you speak, what you speak you believe. She spoke it. She believed it. The Amplified Bible says she continued to speak it all the way down there and then she touched His clothes. The fountain of her blood was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed. Jesus said, “Who touched my clothes?” A multitude had thronged Him, I imagine there had been a lot of people that were touching Jesus just to see if any sparks would fly. You know how people are. Nothing had happened to them. But, then the touch of Faith came. Jesus had healed the woman and didn’t even know she was there. Jesus turned around and said to the woman after she had testified and told him the truth “Daughter, thy faith has made thee whole”. The power of positive faith in what she believed based on the authority of the Word of God. Understand that if you have faith for something that doesn’t agree with the Word of God, that is not Bible faith. That’s high expectations based on wrong information and that will get you in a heap of trouble. It will get you in error out in left field. But when the woman had given her testimony, a fellow came down there and told Jairus not to trouble the Master anymore. You’re daughter is already dead. Now, that’s bad news. Jesus is headed to this house to heal his daughter. Then this woman gets healed and wants to testify. It may have taken an hour to testify and tell everything that had happened to her in twelve years, generally speaking. When Jesus heard the bad news that had come to Jairus “You daughter’s already dead.” Here’s what he said. “Fear not, only believe.” Now, that’s a hard saying in this situation because I know what Jairus was thinking. If He hadn’t stopped and taken so much time getting this woman healed then you’d have gotten there in time to heal my daughter. But, he would have been in strife and they would have a funeral the next day. But, Jesus said to him, “Fear not, only believe”; there’s only one thing you need to do, Jairus. Now, some of you, there is only one thing you need to do. You’ve been holding fast to the Word of God and you have released your faith. Remember that Jairus had said ‘lay your hands on my daughter, she will be healed and she shall live. Now if he holds fast to that, he shall have whatsoever he sayeth, and that’s why Jesus said to him, “Fear not, only believe”. It’s not time to get in fear. Don’t get in doubt and unbelief. Don’t start saying a bunch of stuff now because in this situation, you’re probably going to say the wrong thing. In other words there’s times folks when you just need to keep your mouth shut. (laughs) I mean it. To tell the truth, just don’t say anything because there are times, situations, circumstances, and pressures that you face that make you want to blurt out how bad it is and it’s going to get worse. Then you start exaggerating and you’ll undo everything you’ve done in the days past by the things you’ve just said. You can get over in stark unbelief. But He said, “Fear not, only believe.” It wasn’t time to start making faith confessions. It’s time to begin to rest in what He has already declared and declare it to be true. Thank God it happened. He went in and ran everyone out from Aunt Suzy to Uncle Leroy. There’s everyone bawling and squalling and he ran the whole bunch out. He said, “She’s not dead, she’s asleep.” They laughed him to scorn; he ran everyone out, shut the door and then He raised her from the dead. Now, folks, that’s the power of positive faith. Because Jairus didn’t change what he had believed. He had great faith before his daughter died, but after she died, Jesus said; “Fear not, only believe.” So, there’s something to it when you just hold fast to the Word of God. If you’re fully persuaded it will change situations and circumstances in your life. Now, you’ll see in the Old Testament, again, in II Kings, we’ll not take time to turn to it but you’ll find in Chapter 7, verse 1-12, there are four lepers sitting at the gate that surrounds Samaria. There is starvation inside and there is no food because they’re being besieged and they can’t get any food in there. These lepers are sitting there saying, ‘you know, if we sit here we’re going to die.’ These guys are thinking. One of them, probably a little sharper than the others says ‘if we sit here, we’re going to die. If we could get in the city wall, in which we cannot because they won’t let us in because we are lepers, then they’re starving to death in there-that won’t do us any good. He says: They have food down in the enemies camp, if we by chance just go down there, they might feed us and let us live. If we sit here, we’re going to die so let’s go down there where the food is. Let’s go down to the enemies’ camp.’ I believe God was waiting for someone to go toward to the enemies’ camp. Now, they’re camped out there, Samaria is going to be besieged and taken and these four lepers start down that way. I’ll tell you what, when you begin to act on what you believe, it seems that the angels get involved. On the way down there, near the camp, the four lepers begin finding clothing and all kinds of things. They arrive and there is no one there. They can’t find anyone. And so, they eat all they want, start gathering up the gold and taking the loot. Finally, one of them says: ‘You know, we should go tell the others about this, we shouldn’t be selfish about it.’ So, the lepers go tell the King and he thinks it is an ambush; that old unbelief dripping off of him like molasses off a bucket on a cold morning. Finally they (the King) decided to send someone down there to see and found out it was exactly as they had been told. Now, what happened? I believe when they started down there, God caused the angels to get out there and start marching towards that camp. The camp could hear the army coming. It was the sound of angels, I believe. They thought the King had hired other armies to come and fight. Everyone fled. Towards the end of the story, the Prophet had prophesied that there would be plenty of food tomorrow, about this time even though they laughed at him. His scoffer said that wouldn’t happen if the Lord opened the windows of heaven. The Prophet said it will happen but you’ll never live to partake of it. What happened was the next day; there was plenty of food that was sold at the gate. Then they trampled to death the man that didn’t believe God. Because he didn’t believe the Prophet of God he was trampled in the rush to get food. The power of positive faith is when you find it in the Word of God and stay with it, act on what you believe and believe what the Word says, believe what the Prophet said in the scriptures, and stay with it, it will change your life. It will change situations. Circumstances and situations are all subject to change but, with the support of your words, they may be there forever. Whatever happens to you in life doesn’t change the Word of God. If you will stay with the Word of God, it will eventually change what happens to you in life. Regardless of what it is, it will change what happens to you. And that’s good news anyway you look at it! Hallelujah!
