Over the next two weeks we are looking at Religion and Art.
Take the time to look over your learning objectives. Then do your reading, Chapter 15 in the textbook. Your Conformity and Conflict Articles are #28 Taraka’s Ghost and #29 Basball Magic. There is a really good movie this week that covers both the beginings of religion and
art – and suggests a connection between the two, and also give an possible
explanation as to the rise of City States. You don’t have a discussion question this week, but you do have an activity. You are to draw your Maori Mask. Your mask is a sacred portrate that symbolizes where you come from and where
you are going. You can find the instructions here in the forum posting area. You will turn in your mask the same way that you did your kinship drawing so your
classmates can see it. I did not do a drawing because I don’t want to influence your work. You’ll understand why as you progress into the activity. Post you drawing by
Thursday and then review your classmate’s work. Comment on two drawings.
Next week is Thanksgiving so I am reducing your workload. Review your learning objectives for the week and read Chapter 16 on Art in your text
book. You don’t have any Conformity and Conflict articles this week. For the weekly forum do an Interpretation of your mask, you do not need to share
the interpreation, unless you want to, this information is for you, but do address the
questions in Step 2 and respond to two of your classmates post as well. I hope you enjoy these activities, they should give you a bit of a break from the
normal routine and free up some time for extra Turkey. But remember, your ethnographic project is due the week after Thanksgiving.
Enjoy the holiday see you in two weeks.
