[Mooji] Don’t hold any object
or any objective in the mind. Yes, be open
and keep the attention in complete neutrality. For any real findings, if you already have an idea
of what you’re looking for, then the mind itself
will conjure up some imitation of it, and you’ll say, ‘Aha, yes, that’s it!’
And it won’t be it, it won’t last. Because whatever has a form won’t last. Whatever appears in time and space, it won’t last, it means that it’s changeful,
like time and space are changeful. So don’t hold any idea about awakening,
or Truth, or yourself, don’t hold any image of it. Don’t go to the mind for any reference. Mind cannot provide any reference for that,
it can only fake it. If you say even, to the mind, ’emptiness’, then [imitating mind thinking], ‘OK, emptiness’, it will construct
even the most subtle sensation about emptiness. If you say, ‘the Absolute’, ‘OK, good, I’ve got even that’. ‘God.’ ‘Yes, that’s easy, I’ve got that already.’ So any idea you have is not it. That which is cannot be an idea,
it cannot have a form. It may appear through form,
in fact, all these forms are it, it is manifesting in all these forms, every face, every name is its stage name. But it’s not held inside that name,
it’s not held in that form, it’s not imprisoned in that form. What happens when you don’t hold any idea? When you don’t hold onto any idea? No projection, no anticipation, no striving. When you don’t hold the idea
that something is wrong, or there’s something to fix, or to heal,
or to change, or to find, or to lose, or to expand, or to process, if you don’t hold even the concept of progress, of separation, of getting there, of union, what happens if you hold no idea at all? This won’t take you long,
right here you can do it. What happens if you don’t touch,
don’t cling to any idea? No aspiration, no hope, no promise. Inspect and see. Who are you
if you don’t touch any concept about yourself? Don’t think about it, look. What does it mean if you don’t touch it also? It doesn’t mean that
you must go and bury them somewhere. Don’t go and bury your concepts. It means merely, cease engaging with that,
don’t entertain that. Don’t entertain any notion about Truth, about enlightenment, about grace, about Self. Because all these,
they appear in you and are perceived by yourself. So you must be the earliest,
without yourself none of these can appear, you must be there to witness them. Supposing you have some idea, this desire, ‘I wish to discover my highest Self,
my highest Self!’ And let’s say, the highest being in the universe
appears before you and says, ‘My love, yours is a great longing,
yours is a great desire. I am the highest being in the world
and your desire has reached me, and I’ve come to deliver your desire for you.’ Can you imagine? Your heart is pounding
with excitement and anticipation. ‘Yes, I have found your highest Self.
Here it is.’ Voom. Can you imagine? The most beautiful, the most exquisite vision. Yes, you have five hundred arms, a thousand legs, a million eyes, equal amount of mouths. But in that moment,
however great that experience might feel, something will know after a while, ‘But it cannot be me,
because I’m here to perceive it. I’m here to perceive it,
it’s very nice, it’s very awesome, but it cannot be what I am,
because I’m here to observe it. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much, but no, thank you. How can that be me
when it takes myself to recognise it? I must be here to be pleased or displeased by it. And as for yourself,
you say that I exist because you exist, but I was here and I saw you coming.
You also appeared for me.’ It’s just a clue. You must be the earliest. Drop every idea that you’re told about yourself, drop every idea you have about yourself, because any idea is a limitation. It’s a limitation
and amongst the strongest is that, ‘I am this body, that’s what I am’. Are you this body even?
There’s nothing wrong with this body. Maybe, actually, things go wrong with the body,
of course, yes. But this is not a curse against the body
or the senses, just that, I’m the one
who perceives through senses, I observe the mind. As you said, when you’re investigating, you’re watching what’s happening in the mind, something observes your mind-play, the vital force, breath, body, time,
memory, intellect and ego; something earlier than them. Observe and see. Don’t imagine. Discover! And be one with that which has no form, because whatever you see that has a form,
it’s on the move. It will pass. It appears, it disappears. That which witnesses the appearance and disappearance of any phenomenon,
find that one! In the discovery of that,
immediately there’s peace, a sense of natural expansiveness, that also will be observed there. [Questioner] May I ask one more question?
[M.] Yes. [Q.] When you say,
when you’re searching for the ‘I’, and you seek the thinker or the witness,
and you see something, you said, ‘Focus your full attention on that’. [Mooji] Could you say it again? You threw me off.
[Q.] OK. [Mooji] When I say to find the ‘I’ … [Q.] To find either the thinker or the witness,
something like that, and if you see a thought, like that ‘I’-thought ‘Focus your full attention on that’. I heard you say, ‘Focus your full attention’.
Maybe I’m misquoting. And there’s a tendency in me to focus my full attention
with the idea that it should go down, or something like that, that it should dissolve. [M.] I said,
Catch hold of that which poses as ‘I’, as the sense of ‘me’,
the one who is always talking, who is commentating about life, ‘I did this, I did that, I tried,
I’ve been meditating’. So sometimes I say, Find this meditator.
If you can, find the meditator. All say, ‘I meditate’,
but what is it that meditates?
